Acid-Related Crimes Reach “Epidemic” Levels In UK With Nearly 15 Attacks A Week; Report

Shocking figures obtained by the British newspaper Mirror has revealed there were 2,602 acid attacks in the UK between January 2015 and May 2018, which averages out to 15 per week.

According to charity Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI), the UK has one of the highest rates of acid attacks per capita in the world while it does not have “tight controls on acid sales” or “legislation specific to acid attacks”.

London has become the world capital for acid attacks as nearly three quarters (75%) of all acid attacks taking place there, however, unlike in other countries where 80% of attacks are against women, in British, most victims are young males.

Statistics released by the London Metropolitan Police revealed there were 465 attacks with a “corrosive liquid” recorded in London in 2017, up from 397 in 2016, and 255 in 2015.

Since 2010, there were almost 1,800 attacks using corrosive liquid alone just in London, according to ASTI. Northumbria follows with 109 crimes in the last five years, Cambridgeshire with 69 attacks, Hertfordshire 67, Greater Manchester 57 and Humberside 52.

The police figure also shows a surge in children both as perpetrators and victims of acid-related crimes.

A child of just two years old was the victim of acid attack, while in Cumbria two girls, aged four and five, were targeted by a six and nine-year-old, according to Mirror.

London mayor Sadiq Khan implored the government last year to adopt a “zero tolerance” approach to acid attacks.

“The Metropolitan Police take these attacks extremely seriously and are doing everything in their power to tackle them.” Khan said, “However, we need a new zero-tolerance approach as a country if we are to rid the streets of this scourge.”

The UK saw its first prosecution for an acid attack killing this year. Xeneral Webster, 19, has been jailed for 17 years after he chucked a bottle of acid over Joanne Rand, the 47-year-old nurse who was caught up in a fight over drugs between Webster and another man on 3 June last year. Rand, who had just come from the grave of her daughter, died 11 days later from multiple organ failure.

According to the Breitbart, British is also facing other violent crime wave, with a 22% surge in knife crime and an 11% increase in gun crime last year.
