Downing Street Has A “Unit” Accusing And Attacking Opponents Of Chequers Plan; Duncan Smith Says

Former Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith said Downing Street has a “unit” attacking opponents of Theresa May’s Brexit plans.

Speaking on BBC’s Newsnight programme, the leading Brexiteer warned that the Prime Minister allows her colleagues to “attack” other Tory MPs in a bid to gain support for her Chequers Brexit plan.

“She is allowing a unit in Downing Street to take on its own colleagues and backbenchers and accuse and attack them.” Duncan Smith said.

“Rather than allowing a unit in Downing Street to take on its own colleagues and backbenchers and accuse and attack them, I think the best thing is for them to say: Let’s get together and thrash this out, and see what we can come up with,” he added.

“That is a far better approach, as it carries the party with you.”

Duncan Smith said he the PM’s Chequers plan doesn’t answer the questions raised about leaving the customs union and the single market, noting that “We want something that does.”

“The Northern Ireland backstop is the cause of why the Government’s gone down the Chequers road because they don’t think they can get a free trade deal because they would have to do it” he explained.

The former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions told BBC that he believes there are “plenty of solutions for that.”

“The key point is the European Commission has to be prepared to come to the party and show some flexibility on this so there can be a UK-wide free trade deal.” Duncan Smith said.

The comments came after the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier said Brexit deal could be “possible” within “six or eight weeks”.

Speaking at the Bled Strategic Forum conference in Slovenia, Barnier said: “If we are realistic, I want to reach an agreement on the first stage of the negotiation, which is the Brexit treaty, within six or eight weeks,”
