Mrs May spent yesterday in Brussels meeting with EU officials to set a deal on the Irish border which led to the collapse of a deal at the last minute. Reacting angrily to the event, Mr Miliband said the PM and her Conservative MPs were a “bunch of jokers”.

Arlene Foster, the DUP boss had not approved the agreement which would tie Northern Ireland to the same rules as the Republic in several vital industries. Mrs May’s failure to get the green light for trade talks at next week’s summit would risk throwing the whole Brexit process into crisis.

Later, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn criticised Prime Minister and said: “the Government was completely ill-equipped to negotiate a successful Brexit deal for our country”.

Labour Hove Peter Kyle also said after days of the upbeat briefing, the PM comes home pathetically “empty-handed”. He added: “This is a shambles that puts into perspective the constitutional settlement for our country here.”
