Far-Right Activist Laura Loomer Interrupted Campaign Event For Muslim Candidates

A campaign event for state Minnesota state Rep. Ilhan Omar (DFL) and former Michigan state Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D) was disrupted Saturday night after Laura Loomer, an alt-right American activist confronted them, accusing them of being “Jihadi US candidates” with connections to terror organisations.

Loomer, who formerly worked for Project Veritas, has a long history of attacking Muslims on social media. She posted a video of the incident on Twitter, in which she called Omar and Tlaib candidates “Jihadi” and added that she was helping Minnesotans “break free from Sharia.”

The video shows the group confronted the candidates at Minneapolis’ Holy Land deli, shouting questions about female genital mutilation and Hamas.

Tlaib, the former Michigan state lawmaker, has won the Democratic nomination to run unopposed for a House seat, setting her up to become the first Muslim woman elected to the US Congress.

Omar, the Somali-American politician, was elected a Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, the first Somali-American legislator elected to office in the US.

“I just confronted Rashida Tlaib, the Palestinian woman who won a primary in Michigan last week, & Ilhan Omar, the Somalian woman running for Keith Ellison’s seat in Minnesota. Both are supported by pro-Hamas Linda Sarsour, & CAIR, which is a terrorist org.” Loomer tweeted.

Rep. Ray Dehn, DFL-Minneapolis, who was also in the event, said Loomer and a few other men and women interrupted the candidates as they spoke at Holy Land.

“Unfortunately, [Omar and Tlaib] weren’t able to speak a lot because they kept getting interrupted,” Dehn said, “I’ve seen way too much of this, and it’s really getting sickening.”

“There was a great group of people that were showing support for Rashida and Ilhan, and when you looked at the room, it was a room that reflects America,” Dehn said. “It was a diverse group of people. Islamophobia really has no place.”

On Nov. 2017, Loomer has been banned from ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft after she launched into a vitriolic anti-Muslim tirade in the wake of the New York terrorist attack.

Loomer worked for Canadian far-right website “The Rebel Media” which has been nicknamed “Canadian Breitbart”. She falsely accused a passerby in hijabs of enjoying the attack and called for the creation of a “non-Islamic” ride-hailing app.
