Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Put His Mother Under House Arrest: Report
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has reportedly kept his own mother under house arrest, out of fear she would stand in the way of his rapid consolidation of power.

According 14 current and former US officials who spoke to NBC on condition of anonymity, Prince bin Salman has hidden the whereabouts of his mother from his father, king Salman and the public.

The US official, citing intelligence gathered over several years, told NBC that over the past two years, Mohammed bin Salman has prevented her mother Princess Fahda bint Falah Al Hathleen from seeing the king, put her under house arrest in a palace.

Although the Saudi Embassy in Washington denied the report and claimed the Saudi king was told his third wife is receiving medical treatment overseas, the US intelligence officials believe that MBS worries that she opposed his ascendancy to the throne and might use her influence over the 82-year-old king to prevent it.

The crown prince, according to NBC, has provided his father with several reasons he could not see his mother.

On a visit to the White House in 2015, king Salman apparently mistakenly told then-President Barack Obama that his wife was receiving medical treatment in New York, contrary to the US’s own intelligence that she was not in the country.

One source close to the Saud house told NBC that bin Salman,32, was concerned that his mother was trying to “empower her siblings.”

The Saudi Prince has also been accused of imprisoning his older cousin, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, after usurping him as crown prince in June 2017.

Bin Salman also jailed several of his cousins in Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton hotel during what the Saudi government said was a widespread anti-corruption drive.
