@Southlonestar Was A Russian Troll Behind Fake Pic Of Muslim Woman ‘Ignoring’ Westminster Terror

Hours after the March terror attack on Westminster Bridge in London, a tweeter called @SouthLoneStar posted a picture of a Muslim woman in hijab passing the scene of the attack with the caption:

“Muslim woman pays no mind to the terror attack, casually walks by a dying man while checking phone #PrayForLondon #Westminster #BanIslam.”

While the account, which described itself a “proud TEXAN and AMERICAN patriot.” was picked up by far-right activists in the UK and the US who attacked the woman for her indifference, the woman just came forward to say she had helped those injured.

In the terrorist attack on Westminster Bridge, Khalid Masood, radicalised by Isis, drove a van in pedestrians and killed five people, before being shot by the police.

The Muslim woman contacted Tell MAMA at the time and said:

“Not only have I been devastated by witnessing the aftermath of a shocking and numbing terror attack, I’ve also had to deal with the shock of finding my picture plastered all over social media by those who could not look beyond my attire, who draw conclusions based on hate and xenophobia.”

She said that her thoughts at that moment were one of sadness, fear and concern. She added:

“What the image does not show is that I had talked to other witnesses to try and find out what was happening, to see if I could be of any help, even though enough people were at the scene tending to the victims.”

Later it has been revealed that the Twitter account which posted her picture was one of the thousands of fake accounts set up by a Russian “troll factory” to influence UK and US politics.
