Theresa May Suffers A Humiliating Defeat By Eleven Of Her Tory Rebels
Theresa May is losing her political support in London to deliver the Brexit deal.

Prime Minister is set to meet her fellow EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday while Conservative rebels inflicted a humiliating defeat on her in the House of Commons. 11 Conservative rebels defeated Theresa May in a critical vote on the Brexit deal.

Mrs May had been forced to accept changes to the EU Withdrawal Bill to guarantee Parliament a “meaningful” vote on any deal the government agrees with Brussels. The PM was defeated on Dominic Grieve’s amendment, by 309 votes to 305, a margin of four votes.

The Government said it may possibly try a parliamentary counteroffensive later in the legislative process to undo the change forced upon it.

“We will now determine whether further changes are needed to the Bill to ensure it fulfills its vital purpose.” A Government spokeswoman said.

Recently, the Leader Jeremy Corbyn asked Labour MPs to back an amendment to the PM legislation proposed by ex-Conservative attorney general Dominic Grieve.

Mr Corbyn described the result as “a humiliating loss of authority for the government on the eve of the European Council meeting”.

“Theresa May has resisted democratic accountability. Her refusal to listen means she will now have to accept parliament taking back control.”

Mr Grieve and Stephen Hammond said another defeat was likely next week if the PM persisted in her attempt to fix the date of Brexit. The amendment seeks to set in law that the UK’s membership of the union will end at 11pm GMT on 29 March 2019.

Mr Grieve said: “I hope very much [another rebellion] won’t be necessary because if the government comes back with that date I’m sure the government will be defeated and I have no desire to defeat the government or be involved in the government’s defeat a second time,”
