Watchdog Group: US Airstrikes Killed At Least 5,961 Civilians By The End Of October
The US-led coalition which began its airstrikes in August 2014 in Iraq and Syria, has killed far more civilians than the 800 it reported.

According to a report released by the US-led coalition on Thursday, about 800 civilians have been killed between August 2014 and October 2017 in Iraq and Syria by the US airstrikes.

In their latest monthly statement, the coalition’s estimation was far lower than figures provided by Watchdog group Airwars who announced at least 5,961 unarmed civilians were killed by US airstrikes against ISIS. The bombing campaign that began in August 2014 in Iraq and a month later in Syria has killed far more civilians than the coalition has reported.

The coalition claimed that they hold themselves accountable for actions that may have caused unintentional injury or death to civilians.

“We take all reports of civilian casualties seriously and assess all reports as thoroughly as possible.” The coalition said.

The campaign claimed it has carried out about 28,000 strikes which led to 1,790 civilian’s death, while it was still assessing 695 reports of civilian casualties from strikes it carried out in Iraq and in Syria.

Watchdog group Airwars said the number of civilians killed by US airstrikes could top 9,000. Its figures include at least 1,504 deaths in Iraq and 3,487 in Syria.

Earlier in October, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it had recognized 2,910 Syrian civilian deaths that resulted from US coalition airstrikes.

In December, the coalition reported that there were about 16 airstrikes per day combined in Iraq and Syria. That number jumped to 25 per day in January and reached a peak of more than 50 strikes per day in August and September. The harsh increase in the airstrikes is obvious after Donald Trump took office in late January.
